The event, held at Espacio Almagro before more than 150 representatives from the scientific, institutional, and conservation sectors, strengthened the alliance with the IUCN SSC and showcased projects with real impact: from the recovery of threatened species to the reduction of interactions between orcas and vessels.<\/em><\/p>\n

Coinciding with the celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity, the event was attended by Wolfgang Kiessling, president of Loro Parque, and Vivek Menon, chair of the IUCN Species Survival Commission.<\/em><\/p>\n

In a day marked by scientific leadership, Loro Parque Fundaci\u00f3n held the Biodiversity Meeting this past Thursday at Espacio Almagro in Madrid, before more than 150 prominent figures from the academic, political, and conservation fields. The meeting coincided with the presentation of Spain\u2019s National Red List at the Congress of Deputies to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity, an event in which \u00c1ngel Curros, biological director of the Poema del Mar aquarium, participated to present progress in the protection of critically endangered species such as the angelshark and the spiny butterfly ray; and Dr. Javier Almunia, who presented the CanBIO project.<\/p>\n

During his address, the president of Loro Parque, Wolfgang Kiessling, reiterated the Group\u2019s full willingness to collaborate in the rescue of the orcas Wikie and Keijo, currently at Marineland park in France. Kiessling stressed that this operation is not driven by commercial interests \u2014 \u201cwe do not earn a single euro more by having six orcas instead of four\u201d \u2014 but by a moral, technical, and professional responsibility to prevent the animals from dying without a real alternative.<\/p>\n

The president of Loro Parque was firm in stating that the institution will only proceed with the transfer if it has the express approval of the Government of Spain and if the legal and technical safety of the process is guaranteed. \u201cOur will is to save the lives of these animals and rescue them from a fatal fate,\u201d he said, inviting the Spanish executive to formally recognize the suitability of the facilities in Tenerife, which are global benchmarks in animal welfare. This is an operation that he would undertake as a \u201chuman act\u201d in the absence of marine sanctuaries, as confirmed last week by France\u2019s Minister Delegate for Ecological Transition, Mathieu Lefevre.<\/p>\n

For his part, Vivek Menon, chair of the IUCN Species Survival Commission, highlighted the importance of focusing efforts on the individual defense of each species. Menon cited as a success story the collaboration with Loro Parque Fundaci\u00f3n in the recovery of Lear\u2019s macaw in Brazil, which has gone from being on the brink of disappearance to having more than 2,200 individuals in the wild. \u201cNature is very resilient and grateful; if you do something for it, it will give back to you,\u201d he said, offering the support of the 15,000 researchers who make up his commission to continue collaborating with the Foundation.<\/p>\n

The president of Loro Parque Fundaci\u00f3n, Christoph Kiessling, presented the SofiaNet Project as the major milestone of the evening. This initiative seeks to develop an advanced continuous and automated acoustic monitoring system to determine the presence of cetaceans in the Strait of Gibraltar. By exporting the technology developed in the Canary Islands through the CanBIO project, SofiaNet will make it possible to generate high-quality data to better understand the threats arising from human-made noise and to improve the management of this critical marine area. The project is being carried out in collaboration with the Queen Sofia Foundation, the University of La Laguna, and CIRCE.<\/p>\n

The event also served to highlight other key projects that place the Foundation at the forefront. Dr. Antonio Fern\u00e1ndez, from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, presented his new book, Dolphin Cells, a unique work that uses electron microscopy for pathological diagnosis, making it possible to \u201cspeak with death in order to help life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Dr. Renaud de Stephanis, from CIRCE, explained how 22 years of studies have made it possible to reduce interactions with sailboats by 80% thanks to science-based recommendations, such as sailing in shallow waters and not stopping the vessel.<\/p>\n

Dr. Javier Almunia presented the CanBIO project, which studies ocean acidification, underwater noise, and the impact of climate change on terrestrial and marine biodiversity. The project is a global benchmark and is funded by Loro Parque Fundaci\u00f3n and the Government of the Canary Islands, in collaboration with the University of La Laguna and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.<\/p>\n

With this meeting, Loro Parque Fundaci\u00f3n reaffirms its role as a driving force in global conservation, having already saved 18 species from extinction thanks to a cumulative investment of 30 million dollars.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
