Fuertes’s Parrot

Fuertes’s parrot (Hapalopsittaca fuertesii), classified as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), is a rare Andean parrot with a highly restricted range in the montane cloud forests on the western slopes of Colombia’s Central Andes. It inhabits elevations between 2,600 and 3,800 metres and depends on mature trees with natural cavities for breeding.

Thanks to a conservation project supported by Loro Parque Fundación—combining direct habitat protection, installation of artificial nest boxes, population monitoring, and environmental education with local communities—the species has shown steady signs of recovery after being on the brink of extinction.

Since its rediscovery, when only around 60 individuals were known, the population has increased to an estimated 180–200 birds, representing a 10–25% growth over the past decade. Although deforestation from cattle ranching and logging remains the main threat, these results show that sustained conservation action is improving the long-term outlook for one of the most threatened parrots in the Andes.
