Wolfgang Kiessling highlights “the outstanding contribution of Dr. Javier Almunia, whose legacy has positioned the Foundation as a global reference in marine research and conservation.”
Loro Parque Fundación announces a strategically significant step in its scientific structure: Martin Böye has been appointed as the new Scientific Director for Marine Biology and will lead and coordinate the Foundation’s research and conservation projects carried out across the world’s oceans.
Böye, current President of the European Association for Aquatic Mammals (EAAM), has a solid track record in conservation programs, applied research, scientific education, and zoological management. His expertise includes the development of international initiatives to protect marine mammals, as well as efforts to preserve endangered ecosystems and species.
This transition follows Dr. Javier Almunia’s decision to start a new professional chapter at the University of La Laguna, after more than 27 years with Loro Parque Fundación. He will however maintain close scientific ties with the Foundation through a cooperation agreement with ULL and will serve as an advisor on a scientific committee alongside experts from institutions such as the University of St. Andrews and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Wolfgang Kiessling, President of the Loro Parque Group, highlighted the significance of Almunia’s work: “His contribution has been essential in making Loro Parque Fundación a world leader in marine research and conservation. His commitment, vision and leadership have marked an era and leave a legacy that deeply honours this institution.”
Christoph Kiessling, Vice President of the Loro Parque Group and President of Loro Parque Fundación, also stated: “This appointment marks a crucial step in strengthening our Foundation’s international presence. Martin Böye brings a modern, scientifically grounded perspective that is perfectly aligned with the current challenges of marine conservation. We have full confidence in his ability to lead projects that provide real and effective solutions for the protection of our oceans.”
In his new role, Martin Böye will lead strategic initiatives such as the proposal to establish a Marine Protected Area in Macaronesia, as well as various local conservation efforts, including those aimed at protecting critically endangered species like the Atlantic humpback dolphin off the coast of Senegal.
Böye expressed both gratitude and commitment: “It is an honour to join Loro Parque Fundación and contribute to its mission of protecting marine biodiversity. My goal is to promote scientific projects that achieve tangible impact and to continue the exceptional work the institution has been carrying out for more than three decades.”
With this appointment, Loro Parque Fundación reinforces its leadership in applied research, species conservation, and knowledge generation for the protection of marine life on a global scale.
