Thanks to LPF’s conservation efforts, the Tanimbar Corella has been saved from extinction. Although their populations are currently fragmented, their numbers are increasing, which gives even more hope to this parakeet.
Tanimbar Corella
Loro Parque Fundación funded a research project in the Tanimbar Islands, in eastern Indonesia—one of the region’s top conservation priorities—aimed at assessing population status, habitat use, and the impact of illegal trade.
Although the results revealed relatively stable populations, the project, carried out in collaboration with BirdLife Indonesia, also highlighted growing pressure on the forests from logging activities. This made urgent action necessary, involving local community engagement, government awareness and training, and environmental education programmes to protect natural habitats and ensure the long-term conservation of these endemic species.
The Tanimbar corella is one of the smallest cockatoos and is known for its agile, graceful flight. Sadly, it is also commonly kept as a pet, adding further pressure on wild populations.
