Horned Parakeet, New Caledonia

In New Caledonia, a parakeet with elegant feather tufts on its head has long struggled against invasive species in its habitat—particularly rats, which prey on its eggs and chicks. By monitoring breeding territories throughout the season and identifying the species’ reproductive strategies and habitat conditions, its numbers have improved in recent years, leading to a change in its conservation status from Endangered to Vulnerable.

Understanding the types of landscapes it uses, its daily behaviours, and the threats it faces requires extensive research and technical work. In this case, those efforts have produced excellent results.
