Grey-breasted Parakeet

The grey-breasted parakeet (Pyrrhura griseipectus), an endemic bird of northeastern Brazil found in the montane forests of the state of Ceará, is classified as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), mainly due to habitat loss and illegal capture.

To halt its decline and lay the groundwork for its recovery, Loro Parque Fundación supports a comprehensive project combining in situ management, environmental education, and advanced scientific research. A key component is an ambitious genetic study aimed at identifying pure populations and preserving the species’ genetic diversity.

Among the most impactful actions are the installation and monitoring of nest boxes, which have led to the birth of over 1,500 chicks in just over a decade, and the development of genetic tools to guide the selection of individuals for breeding programmes and potential future reintroductions.

This approach helps prevent risks such as hybridisation with related species and enhances the long-term conservation prospects of one of Brazil’s most threatened parrots.
