Thanks to LPF’s conservation efforts, the Yellow-shouldered Amazon has been saved from extinction. Although their populations are currently fragmented, their numbers are increasing, which gives even more hope to this parakeet.
Yellow-shouldered Amazon
The yellow-shouldered amazon (Amazona barbadensis), a parrot endemic to the arid zones and coastal forests of northern Venezuela, has achieved a significant improvement in its conservation status thanks to a comprehensive project led by Loro Parque Fundación.
Key actions have included intensive nest monitoring by a trained network of eco-guardians, the installation and upkeep of artificial nests, the restoration of damaged nesting cavities, and community-based education and management programmes to curb the illegal capture of chicks and habitat degradation.
As a direct result, 2,025 chicks have successfully fledged on the Macanao Peninsula, and the species has improved its status on the IUCN Red List, moving from Vulnerable to Near Threatened. The project is further strengthened by captive breeding efforts, which help ease pressure on wild populations and represent one of the most remarkable parrot recovery cases in the Caribbean.
