Red-tailed Amazon

The red-tailed amazon (Amazona brasiliensis), an endangered parrot species endemic to the Atlantic tropical forest of southeastern Brazil, is closely linked to low coastal areas and forested islands, where it nests in large trees. It has shown a remarkable recovery thanks to sustained conservation work supported by Loro Parque Fundación.

Through monitoring of wild populations, protection of breeding areas, control of illegal capture, installation and assessment of artificial nests, systematic recording of natural cavities, and environmental education programmes, the population has grown from around 2,500 individuals in the 1980s to an estimated 9,000–10,000 today.

This progress led the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to downlist the species from Endangered to Vulnerable. Despite these advances, the species still faces challenges such as habitat loss, tourism development, and a shortage of suitable nesting cavities—highlighting the need to maintain and expand long-term conservation efforts.
