Thanks to LPF’s conservation efforts, the Cuban Amazon has been saved from extinction. Although their populations are currently fragmented, their numbers are increasing, which gives even more hope to this parakeet.
Cuban Amazon
The Cuban amazon (Amazona leucocephala) stands today as one of the strongest examples of parrot recovery in the Caribbean, thanks to the long-term efforts supported by Loro Parque Fundación.
Through technical and financial backing of conservation projects in Cuba—led by biologist Maikel Cañizares and closely linked to work with the Cuban parakeet (Psittacara euops)—the programme combines applied research, the use of camera traps on cliffs, artificial clay nests, community-based monitoring, and nest inspections during the breeding season.
At the same time, the Foundation runs ex situ breeding programmes that serve as a safety net, helping to reduce pressure on wild populations. These individuals can be seen at the Loro Parque Animal Embassy.
Thanks to this integrated approach, the wild population has grown from fewer than 10,000 to over 27,000 individuals, leading the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to improve its status in 2024 from Vulnerable to Near Threatened—marking a key milestone in the species’ conservation journey.
